Where to Retire Magazine Announces
50 Best Master-Planned Communities in the United States

Houston, TX (June 6, 2011) – Where to Retire reveals “The Short List: 50 Best Master-Planned Communities in the United States” in the bimonthly magazine’s July/August issue on newsstands June 21. Retirees today have their sights set on a dynamic and fulfilling retirement lifestyle, seeking out communities with friendly neighbors and amenities to keep their minds and bodies active.

Research began nearly a year ago when Where to Retire editors gathered information on more than 150 communities across the nation and eventually zeroed in on those that are amenity-rich, with clubhouses, recreation and activities to help residents stay fully engaged.

Where to Retire publisher Karen Northridge said, “Like the people who inhabit them, no two master-planned developments are exactly alike. Yet, the combination of amenities and social opportunities at each produces a common result: the interesting, active and fulfilling lifestyle retirees seek. Clubhouses, fitness centers, social clubs and educational classes mean residents get much more than a house at a planned community.”

The selection contains communities in 17 states, including places beyond traditional retirement havens. The choice of neighborhoods runs the gamut in price, from those featuring manufactured homes starting in the $80,000s to developments where site-built, single-family homes begin in the mid-$400,000s. Just over half the developments are active-adult communities, where residents must meet minimum age requirements. The communities are not ranked, but rather profiled in alphabetical order by state. Also, a two-page chart gives a snapshot of all 50 choices and a guide to their amenities.

In addition to the top 50 communities, Where to Retire includes the Hall of Fame, a small group of established neighborhoods previously recognized by the magazine, as well as Communities on the Rise.
